I fucking hate caveats. I hate "both but different"s, I despise "in one particular sense but overall"s, and I positively loathe "well, on the one hand..."s.
If one is going to state a preference, then state the damn preference! Don't couch it in half-hearted caveats that simply end up as mocking footnotes.

Look at it as a nice thing. It was about sparing your feelings. Yeah, you say don't bother, but isn't that only because you're hurt that the caveat had to be made in the first place? Admit it, the only way you would have been happy is if you had been the only one mentioned. And that's not exactly fair.
